Open House is this
Wednesday night from 5:30-6:20 for our first graders! I sure hope to see you there! We will be discussing grading, expectations, homework, and we'll even have a little hands-on science activity! Be sure to come! If you speak Spanish and English, we would love to have you assist us by translating for parents that speak only Spanish during the presentation. It sure would be a great help and it would benefit all of our students by helping all parents understand the expectations for first graders at our school. Thank you in advance! Dress Code update: Please be sure to have your children wear closed-toed shoes to school for safety. September 18: Early Release, Open House 5:30 September 23: No school for students September 25th: Early Release We have some great new pictures on the First Grade Friends Photos page...check them out! You would have been so proud of your first grader today! We had our first official "surprise" fire drill and, thanks to all of our practicing last week, our class got outside in an orderly fashion...and in RECORD time! Safety first!
I am so excited about tomorrow's Text Talk activity! We have been reading The Principal's New Clothes all week. Our culminating activity is to design, draw, and describe in writing a "new outfit" for Mrs. Perez or Mr. MacHardy! Our principals are so brave; they agreed to have their pictures taken so that we can create new clothes for them! I will post pictures as soon as we are done! This week our core lessons will be teaching us Number Sense and
Decoding Words/Comprehension. In Math, we are working to find the number combinations to make numbers up to 10. For example, we can make 5 by adding 5+0, 4+1, 3+2, 2+3, 1+4, and 0+5. Our enrichment lessons will be using this same skill for higher numbers! No matter what our entry level, we will all be challenged! In Reading, we are learning cvc words which are words that are built in consonant-vowel-consonant form. For example, dog, cat, hat, rat, pot, sit, hut, set, and many more. When we read these words, we will be stretching them out to hear all of the sounds in them...like this, "h-aaaaaa-t" for hat. This will help us decode more difficult words later! Of course, some of us know how to read these words, so right now we are reviewing in whole group and providing enrichment for kiddos that need it during independent reading! Comprehension lessons are dealing with setting, story elements, and beginning/middle/end. |
